Darling Harbour

A working dock until the 1980s, rebuilt as a waterfront of museums, restaurants and attractions on the western edge of the city centre. Pyrmont Bridge, a steel swing bridge of 1902, crosses the middle of it and is now for pedestrians only.

⚠️ It is the most openly commercial place on this site, and it is honest about that. The walking, the water and the bridge are free; nearly everything with a door charges.

What it costs

⭐ Free to walk, sit and cross. The aquarium, the wildlife park and the wax museum are separately ticketed and are not cheap; the Chinese Garden of Friendship takes a small admission and is the best value of them.

When to go

Evening, when the water reflects the lights and the promenade is busy. Weekday afternoons are dead, which is pleasant if the crowds elsewhere have worn you out.

Getting there

Ten minutes’ walk west from Town Hall station, or a light rail stop from Central. There is also a ferry from Circular Quay, which is the nicer way in.

⭐ Tap on and tap off. Fares here are distance-based, so failing to tap off charges you the maximum for the line. A contactless credit or debit card works at the gate exactly like an Opal card and earns the same caps, so most visitors never buy a card at all — ⚠️ but use the same card every time, because the caps are counted per card. There is a daily cap, a weekly cap, and a much lower cap on Sundays, after which the whole network is one fare. See Getting Around.

If you only have an hour

Cross Pyrmont Bridge, walk the eastern shore round Cockle Bay, and cut into the Chinese Garden if it is open. Thirty-five minutes, and skip the ticketed attractions unless you have children.

What people get wrong

⛔ Do not buy a combined attraction pass here on impulse. Three of the four big ones are owned by the same operator and the pass only pays if you genuinely want all of them — which almost nobody does.
