Access Sydney is a practical guide to one city, written around the mechanics rather than the highlights: how the fare caps work, which ferry is public transport and which is not, what is genuinely free, and what the flags on a beach are for.

It exists because the questions that decide whether a trip to Sydney goes well are almost never the ones a highlights list answers. Nobody’s week is ruined by choosing the wrong beach. Weeks are spoiled by paying for a harbour cruise you had already bought with your transport fare, by arriving at the airport gate and discovering a charge nobody mentioned, and by swimming outside the flags.

How it is written

Every page describes a mechanism rather than quoting a figure. Opal caps are adjusted most years, admissions are revised, and the airport access fee changes with them. So this site tells you what is free, what is capped, what is included in a fare you have already paid and what has a dress code or a closing day — and sends you to the operator for the number.

⛔ Nothing here is invented. No prices, fares, opening times or entry rules are written from memory or filled in to look complete. Where something is uncertain it says so, and where a rule changes often it says that too.

Access Sydney is written and maintained with the assistance of AI, edited and fact-checked before publication. Photographs are from Wikimedia Commons, used under their licences and credited individually on the page they appear on.

Country

This guide is about a city on Gadigal land, in the Eora nation, and we try to say so where it matters rather than as a formula. Sovereignty was never ceded.

Corrections

Corrections are the most useful thing you can send. If a cap has changed, a ferry route has been renumbered, or a pool has closed for repairs, please say so.
