Barangaroo Reserve

Until 2015 this was a container terminal. It is now a headland park built out of around ten thousand blocks of sandstone quarried on the site itself, shaped to the contour the shoreline had before the docks — a reconstruction of a coastline rather than a lawn on top of one.

It is named for Barangaroo, a Cammeraygal woman who refused to adopt British dress or manners and is one of the few individuals of the first contact years the record actually names.

What it costs

⭐ Free, open, and unfenced.

When to go

Late afternoon, when the sandstone is warm and the light is across the water. It is one of the few harbour-front places in the city that is not crowded at any hour.

Getting there

A ten-minute walk north along the water from Darling Harbour, or south from the Rocks. Wynyard station is five minutes uphill.

If you only have an hour

Walk the shoreline path from the Rocks end round the headland and back up through the terraces. Thirty minutes, and the view back to the bridge is the reason.

What people get wrong

⚠️ Do not confuse the reserve with the towers behind it. Barangaroo South is offices, apartments and a casino; the reserve is the headland at the north end, and it is the part worth walking to.
