Two Days in Sydney

The second day is the water. ⭐ The ferry to Manly is an ordinary fare, it takes half an hour, and it crosses the open harbour between the heads — the single best thing you can do with a transport ticket anywhere in this country.

Do it as a return with an afternoon at the other end, not as a there-and-back.

The plan

  • Day 1 — As the one-day plan.
  • Day 2, 09:30 — ⭐ F1 to Manly from Circular Quay wharf 3. Sit outside and at the back so the city recedes in front of you. ⚠️ Check the boat — some fast ferries on this run are privately operated and are not on Opal.
  • 10:15 — Off the ferry and straight up the Corso to the ocean beach. Swim between the flags.
  • 12:00 — Walk right along the front to Shelly Beach — sheltered, calm, and the snorkelling one — and up onto the headland above it.
  • 13:30 — Lunch on the harbour side at Manly, looking back at the wharf.
  • 15:30 — Ferry back. ⭐ If you can time it for late afternoon, you cross with the sun low and the city ahead of you, which is the version people remember.
  • 17:00 — Darling Harbour or Barangaroo on foot from the Quay, whichever the weather suits.
  • 19:00 — Dinner. ⚠️ Book if it is Thursday to Saturday.

⭐ If your second day is a Sunday, the lower Sunday cap means the ferry, the buses and the trains together will cost you very little. Use it, and start early, because everyone else is doing the same.

What this plan is built around

Not a list of sights, but the constraints. ⭐ The fare caps — daily, weekly, and a much lower one on Sundays — mean that once you have hit a cap every further trip that period costs nothing, so a ferry-heavy day is cheaper than it looks and doing all your travelling on one day beats spreading it. ⚠️ The weather decides the order, not the plan: a clear day goes to the harbour and the coast, a wet one to the free galleries and the Barracks, and every plan here can be reordered on the morning without losing anything. ⚠️ The UV inverts the usual rhythm — the middle of a summer day is the worst time to be on an exposed clifftop walk and the best time to be indoors. And ⚠️ Sunday is the cheap day and the busy day at once, so use the cap and start early.
