Manly

A suburb on the north side of the harbour heads with a harbour beach on one side, an ocean beach on the other, and a short pedestrian street called the Corso joining them. The ferry from Circular Quay takes about half an hour and crosses the open water between the heads.

⭐ That crossing is the best thing you can do with an ordinary transport fare anywhere in this country.

What it costs

⭐ Free once you are there — the beaches, the Corso and the walk to Shelly Beach all cost nothing.

The fare is an ordinary Opal ferry fare and counts towards your daily cap like any other trip.

When to go

Late afternoon, going out, so you cross the harbour in low sun and come back after dark with the city lit in front of you. ⚠️ The crossing is genuinely rough in a southerly and the ferry does not slow down for it.

Getting there

F1 from Circular Quay wharf 3. ⚠️ Check which boat you are boarding: the large green-and-yellow ferries are the Opal service, and some fast ferries on the same run are privately operated and are not on Opal.

⭐ The ferry is public transport, not a cruise. It runs on the same Opal fare as a bus, it counts towards the same daily cap, and it crosses the same water the harbour cruises charge many times as much to show you. ⚠️ Some fast ferries to Manly are privately operated and are not on Opal — check the operator on the wharf before you tap.

If you only have an hour

Off the ferry, straight up the Corso to the ocean beach, then right along the front to Shelly Beach and back. Fifty minutes, and Shelly is the calm snorkelling one.

What people get wrong

⚠️ People treat the ferry as the sight and stay twenty minutes. Manly is worth an afternoon: two beaches, the walk round to Shelly, and the headland above it with the view back down the coast.

⚠️ Swim between the red-and-yellow flags. They mark the stretch the lifesavers are actually watching, and it moves during the day because the rips move. A rip is a current running out to sea, it is what drowns people here, and the response is to raise an arm and float rather than swim against it. ⭐ The UV in an Australian summer is genuinely extreme — the shade, the hat and the shirt are not fussiness.
