Royal Botanic Garden

Thirty hectares wrapped around Farm Cove, immediately east of the Opera House, founded in 1816 and free every day since. It was the colony’s first farm, on Gadigal land, and it is now the piece of ground from which the whole harbour makes sense.

⭐ Walk to Mrs Macquarie’s Point at the far end and you get the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge in a single frame. That is the photograph everybody comes for, it is from a public park, and it costs nothing.

What it costs

⭐ Free, all of it, every day. There is a paid glasshouse and a paid guided tour; the garden itself, the harbour frontage and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair are not.

When to go

⭐ Sunrise, at Mrs Macquarie’s Point, is the best free hour in Sydney and there will be perhaps a dozen people there. ⚠️ The garden closes at dusk, and dusk is early in winter.

Getting there

The main gate is beside the Opera House. From Circular Quay it is a ten-minute walk along the water; Mrs Macquarie’s Point is another twenty from there.

If you only have an hour

In at the Opera House gate, along the harbour edge past Farm Cove, out to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, then back through the middle of the garden rather than the way you came. An hour, and it is the single best hour on this site.

What people get wrong

⚠️ Most visitors stop at the Opera House and turn round. The good part starts about four hundred metres further on, and almost nobody walks it.

⚠️ The chair itself is a sandstone bench, not a monument. The view is the thing.
