The Bondi to Coogee Walk

Six kilometres of clifftop path from Bondi south to Coogee, past Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and the Waverley Cemetery, with the ocean on your left the whole way. It takes about two hours at a walking pace and rather longer if you swim, which is the point.

⭐ If you do one thing in Sydney that is not on a list, do this. It is free, it needs no booking, and it is the walk locals actually do.

What it costs

⭐ Free, entirely, at any hour. The ocean pools along it are a mixture: Bronte Baths is free, and the ones at Coogee charge a small admission.

When to go

Morning, walking south, so the sun is behind you. ⚠️ There is very little shade on the clifftop and the UV is severe — this is a hat-and-water walk, not a stroll.

⭐ In spring the whole path becomes an outdoor sculpture exhibition for a few weeks, which is free and extremely crowded.

Getting there

Start at the southern end of Bondi Beach; finish at Coogee and take a bus back. It works just as well in reverse and slightly better in the afternoon that way.

⭐ Tap on and tap off. Fares here are distance-based, so failing to tap off charges you the maximum for the line. A contactless credit or debit card works at the gate exactly like an Opal card and earns the same caps, so most visitors never buy a card at all — ⚠️ but use the same card every time, because the caps are counted per card. There is a daily cap, a weekly cap, and a much lower cap on Sundays, after which the whole network is one fare. See Getting Around.

If you only have an hour

Bondi to Bronte is about half of it, takes forty minutes, and includes the best stretch — the cliff above Tamarama and the Bronte baths at the end. Bus back from Bronte.

What people get wrong

⚠️ People set out at midday in the summer with no water. It is exposed the whole way. ⚠️ Also: the path is a shared path, and it is genuinely busy on a weekend morning.

⚠️ Swim between the red-and-yellow flags. They mark the stretch the lifesavers are actually watching, and it moves during the day because the rips move. A rip is a current running out to sea, it is what drowns people here, and the response is to raise an arm and float rather than swim against it. ⭐ The UV in an Australian summer is genuinely extreme — the shade, the hat and the shirt are not fussiness.
