Bondi Beach

A kilometre of sand in a suburb eight kilometres from the middle of the city, and the most famous beach in Australia by a distance that has nothing to do with it being the best one. It is a working beach with a surf club, a promenade, a skate bowl and a pool at each end.

What surprises visitors is how ordinary it is. People swim before work here.

What it costs

⭐ Free. The beach, the promenade and the changing pavilion cost nothing.

The pool at the southern end, the Icebergs, charges a small admission to swim; looking at it from the walkway above is free, which is what most of the photographs are.

When to go

⭐ Early. At seven the beach belongs to swimmers and runners; by eleven on a summer Saturday it is very crowded and the parking is hopeless. Winter is the local secret — the water is cold, the light is better, and the walk is empty.

Getting there

There is no train to Bondi Beach. Train to Bondi Junction, then a bus down the hill — about twenty-five minutes from the city all in, on one fare, and both legs count towards the same cap.

⭐ Tap on and tap off. Fares here are distance-based, so failing to tap off charges you the maximum for the line. A contactless credit or debit card works at the gate exactly like an Opal card and earns the same caps, so most visitors never buy a card at all — ⚠️ but use the same card every time, because the caps are counted per card. There is a daily cap, a weekly cap, and a much lower cap on Sundays, after which the whole network is one fare. See Getting Around.

If you only have an hour

Walk the promenade north to south, look down at the Icebergs from the walkway, then keep going — the coastal walk starts right there and the next beach is fifteen minutes away.

What people get wrong

⛔ Bondi is not the best beach in Sydney and does not claim to be. It is the most famous. Bronte, Coogee and Manly are all better on a crowded day, and the walk between them is better than any of them.

⚠️ Swim between the red-and-yellow flags. They mark the stretch the lifesavers are actually watching, and it moves during the day because the rips move. A rip is a current running out to sea, it is what drowns people here, and the response is to raise an arm and float rather than swim against it. ⭐ The UV in an Australian summer is genuinely extreme — the shade, the hat and the shirt are not fussiness.
